ABOUT ELISE LAVIOLETTE
I am an art therapist who uses collage to depict the experience of mental illness. I am also the program manager at the Oasis in Kanata where I facilitate the Caregiver Matters support group. This piece is an Ode to the caregivers who continue to show up - sometimes awkwardly, sometimes gracefully, always with love - they continue to show up.
Kinsugi refers to the century-old Japanese art of repairing ceramic with gold. The Kinsugi method celebrates the history, fractures and breaks of the pottery often making the repaired piece more beautiful than the original. This collage celebrates the beauty of the golden joinery and resilience I have had the privileged of witnessing families affected by mental illness.
